County waste collection candidates narrowed to three

NATCHEZ —Adams County supervisors narrowed the field of potential waste collection service providers Tuesday from six to three.
During a special called meeting Tuesday, supervisors unanimously ruled out accepting bids from Arrow Disposal Service Inc., United Waste Services and Waste Management — leaving Hometown Waste LLC, Metro Service Group and Waste Pro open for negotiation.
Joe Murray, county administrator, said a few of the service suppliers were ruled out because of price.
“Just by looking at the rates and the additional values that were offered, Arrow and Waste Management are going to be pretty much out of the running,” Murray said.
The board voted unanimously only to consider the rates for twice-a-week waste pickup. Waste Management, Arrow and United Waste were the most expensive bids for twice-a-week service — at a rate per household of $13.50, $16.67 and $12.99 respectively.
Supervisors agreed to meet with the remaining bidders to review contracts after the board’s regularly scheduled 9 a.m. meeting on July 16.
Scott Slover, board attorney, said the county may or may not accept a bid after further reviewing the contracts.
“We have enough information to go ahead and create a budget (for the 2018-2019 fiscal year),” Slover said. “There’s no time pressure to choose a provider right now.”
Slover said the county’s current contract with Waste Pro ends Nov. 30, and a budget must be approved by August to go into effect by Oct. 1.
In other matters at Monday’s board of supervisors meeting, the board:
- Unanimously approved two travel requests for staff members.
- Took under advisory bids for exterior paint for Kingston School.
- Unanimously approved a pay raise for road department employee Keith Wallace for his time in service.
- Unanimously agreed to purchase a Caterpillar excavator for $75,256.80.
- Went into executive session to discuss the lease of the former International Paper Mill property to an unnamed company.
