NATCHEZ — The former Natchez General Hospital on Oak Street is soon to be converted into a senior-living apartment building, despite some opposition from members of the Natchez Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
By a majority vote of 4-2, the board passed the motion to accept an offer from Magnolia Medical Foundation to acquire the property, with aldermen Dan Dillard and Sarah Carter Smith voting “nay.”
The motion was presented to the board Tuesday afternoon at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting by Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis, and included stipulations that the Magnolia Medical Foundation must meet — or else ownership of the property would revert back to the city.
Mathis’ motion specified that the new property owners are not allowed to apply for an ad valorem tax exemption and must comply with restrictions and requirements included in the deed of acquisition and those established by the public properties committee.
Alderwoman Smith, who voted against the proposal, said she felt apprehensive about the foundation’s plans because all of the information was not provided as requested.
“In the request for proposal, they were supposed to provide detailed information regarding where they were going to get the funding, which they did not do,” Smith said after the meeting. “That alone is sketchy. … How do you negotiate when you don’t have all the details that are required?”
Smith said she also is concerned about the motive behind the agreement because of the nature of the building that is being discussed. Smith said she wants to be sure that any senior citizen who could be housed in the new facility will receive proper treatment.
Aldermen Mathis and Dillard were unavailable after the meeting for further comment.
