City OKs budget, no tax increase

NATCHEZ — Natchez aldermen adopted the city’s fiscal year 2018-2019 budget during a special-called meeting Friday evening.
The new budget does not carry a tax increase over the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
The overall millage is 46.732, valued at approximately $117,051 per mil, the same as the fiscal year 2018, said Interim City Clerk James Johnston.
The adopted budget includes a projected revenue of $15,633,500 and expenditures of $15,631,545.16, which leaves a modest surplus of $1,954.84, he said.
The vote to approve and adopt the budget was unanimous, with Aldermen Ben Davis, Joyce Mathis and Sarah Smith calling out their votes via telephone calls.
In other matters at the special called meeting Friday evening, the board:
-Unanimously approved the renewal of worker’s compensation insurance, with a premium just under $300,000 that is payable over a 12-month period.
-Unanimously voted to enter executive session to discuss personnel and litigation over wage issues from the within the city clerk’s and mayor’s office.
– Unanimously approved a Department of Labor settlement of $4,000 and $2,500 for two unnamed employees who allegedly earned overtime pay that was not accounted for.
