DERMOTT, Ark.— Former Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell was involved in a serious automobile accident Friday afternoon that resulted in the death of the second driver and injury three other people.
At approximately 12:40 p.m. Friday, Maxwell’s vehicle collided with a westbound Nissan on Arkansas 35, while driving south on U.S. 61 in Dermott, Arkansas, and his wife, Roselinda, in the passenger seat.
Driver Marie Raye Moss, 84, of Lake Village, Arkansas, was pronounced dead approximately 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital in Desha.
Randy Maxwell, Roselinda Maxwell and Chaunea Mosely, 41, of Lake Village, were taken to the hospital after the accident.
Randy Maxwell said he and Roselinda both had some bruising, and Roselinda has a broken wrist and a broken rib. Both are back at home in Ferriday as of Monday afternoon and are still recovering, Randy Maxwell said.
Mosely’s condition is unknown.
“All in all, we’re blessed to be here,” Randy Maxwell said. “We were headed home from Branson (Missouri) and a lady ran a stop sign — failed to yield — and we T-boned her.”
Randy Maxwell said the accident was inevitable.“I was a sheriff more than 20 years, and I’ve worked a lot of accidents,” he said. “It was totally and completely unavoidable. I had cruise control on, no time to react and didn’t see it coming. … Both of us had our seatbelts on, which saved our lives. … We’ve kept that family in our prayers since it happened.”
