NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School quarterback J.T. Taylor had nearly 100 rushing yards and four touchdowns as the Green Wave shut out the Copiah Academy Colonels 34-0 Friday night at D’Evereux Stadium.
Taylor also completed eight of 15 passes for 140 yards with no interceptions. Tyriek Lee also had a solid game as part of Cathedral’s rushing attack with 92 yards and one touchdown on six carries.
Green Wave head coach Chuck Darbonne said this was probably the best game Cathedral has played since he’s been there. Especially against the MAIS Class AAAA team that clobbered the Green Wave last year.
“We played a heck of a game. With came with some intensity tonight,” Darbonne said. “All phases of the game, we played with a lot of intensity and a lot of execution. We were zoned in.”
Cathedral jumped out to an early 14-0 lead increased its lead to 28-0 by halftime. Copiah Academy (2-4) held the Green Wave to six points in the second half, but the Colonels’ offense was in itself dreadful — as in just 143 total yards.
Darbonne attributed to the success on offense not only to Taylor and Lee, but also the offensive line for not giving up a sack as well as giving the backs room to run the ball. He also said that Taylor did a good job throwing the ball around to his receivers. Lance Gaude has four receptions for 67 yards.
As for the defense, Darbonne said, “We were really good. Lee and Bryson Moore, they weren’t blocked all night. They gave them problems.
Cathedral (4-1) travels to Raymond to face Central Hinds Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
