NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies have served several search warrants and made arrests for their part in a joint investigation into early Saturday morning shootings at several locations in Natchez, said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.
The joint investigative team is made up of the Natchez Police Department, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
As a result of the joint investigation, Jamaien Washington, 20, and Darryl K. Hurts Jr., 20, both face charges of murder, four counts of aggravated assault, one charge of drive-by shooting, shooting into a dwelling, shooting into a vehicle and felony malicious mischief, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.
In related arrests, Patten said the ACSO arrested Russell Hazlip after deputies said they found him at a residence at 545 Ratcliff Place in possession of two loaded handguns, 120 hydrocodone tables, eight oxycodone tablets, one suboxone, more than an ounce of marijuana, $338 cash and digital scales.
Hazlip was being held Tuesday in the Adams County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon, Patten said.
Hazlip has a history of violent arrests, including most recently a Feb. 18, 2017, incident in which he reportedly ran from deputies when he was being pursued for a bond revocation.
At the time, Hazlip reportedly cut through the lawn of a residence at the corner of Sherwood Drive and South Shields Lane, Patten said, and then rammed a deputy’s vehicle and continued to drive through lawns before getting stuck in a ditch.
Hazlip then reportedly exited the vehicle with a loaded gun in his hand, Patten said at the time, and deputies were able to apprehend him after he allegedly resisted arrest and was non-compliant.
In another incident in September 2016, Hazlip reportedly almost ran a deputy over with a truck while the deputy was investigating a stolen motorcycle on the side of Liberty Road. Hazlip reportedly then fled from deputies and was later arrested. Hazlip was charged then with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and receiving stolen property in that incident.
Hazlip was reportedly charged on Feb. 10, 2017, with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer after deputies went to Hazlip’s residence trying to serve an arrest warrant.
After the Feb. 18, 2017, incident Hazlip was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
For that incident, Hazlip entered a guilty plea to a charge of felony fleeing in Adams County Circuit Court on May 25, 2017, before Circuit Court Judge Forrest A. Johnson.
Hazlip was sentenced to serve five years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections with full credit for time served and fines and after “serving three years, the remaining two years shall be on formal reporting post release supervision…” court records state.
Hazlip, Patten said, had only recently been released from prison when he was arrested earlier this week.
Also, the ACSO at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday, Patten said, received a tip about a vehicle believed to have been used in the Saturday morning shootings.
Patten said the ACSO Special Operations Group responded to 64 Pineview Drive where they found a Chevrolet Tahoe, belonging to Washington, with bullet holes in the front passenger-side door and window.
Patten said he turned the vehicle over to the Natchez Police Department for processing and Washington voluntarily went to the Natchez Police Department for an interview.
Washington was subsequently arrested on the above referenced charges.
Also as part of the investigation, Patten said deputes served a search warrant at 6 Ouachita Street where they recovered four guns from the residence and a loaded AR-15 style rifle.
Patten also personally arrested Darnell Stevenson who was wanted for questioning in the case after he said he spotted him sitting in a car on Country Club Drive. Patten said a car belonging to Stevenson that was next to where Stevenson was sitting had an AR-15-style rifle in plain view.
Deputies served a search warrant on the property and removed the loaded AR-15-style rifle from the car and later learned it had been reported stolen. Stevenson is charged with felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property.
Patten said the firearms cases have been turned over to the agents of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
Patten said the ACSO has so far logged 122 hours in overtime assisting the Natchez Police Department in the Saturday shootings.
