FERRIDAY — The Ferriday High School Trojans advanced to the quarterfinals of the LHSAA Class 2A State Playoffs, but head coach Stanley Smith was not pleased with the team’s performance.
No. 3 seed Ferriday did pitch another shutout in the postseason with a27-0 win over No. 14 seed and District 2-2A foe General Trass High School. But there were some things that Smith said need fixing.
“We have to play better. A little more focus. A little more intensity. We have to play better to advance through the next round,” Smith said.
The Trojans got off to a fast start thanks to a 57-yard touchdown pass from Byron Milligan to Jamien Green and a 15-yard TD pass from Kobe Dillon to Da’minya Milligan within the first six minutes of the first quarter to go up 13-0.
Then their offense bogged down for much of the rest of the ball game.
Smith said several penalty calls contributed to that more than what the Panthers’ defense was doing.
“Every time we had a big play, it was called back. We had over 10 penalties in the third quarter. Unheard of,” Smith said.
Da’minya Milligan scored on a 47-yard run early in the second quarterto give the Trojans a 19-0 lead.
Midway through the quarter, General Trass (8-4) drove the ball from their 48-yard line to the Ferriday 32-yard line before Damion Milligan had a tackle for a loss and Kylyn Lewis had a sack that would lead to the Panthers turning the ball over on downs.
“We executed a little better defensively. We need to have a little more nastiness and finish games,” Smith said.
Ferriday had a golden opportunity to stretch its lead late in the first half with the ball at the General Trass 12-yard line, but the Trojans didn’t gain a single yard and turned the ball over themselves.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Trojans scored with about 3 minutes togo on Byron Milligan’s 1-yard touchdown run. Da’minya Milligan ran infor the two-point conversion.
Dillon completed 12 of 24 passes for 132 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 43 yards on six carries. Da’minya Milligan had 33 yards on six carries and Byron Milligan had 24 yards on three carries. Green had five catches for 89 yards and Justin Burns had four receptions for 56 yards.
Ferriday (9-3) will travel to Greensburg, La., to take on No. 6 seedSt. Helena College & Career Academy next Friday at 7 p.m. The 10-2 Hawks defeated Northeast High School 26-14.
