NATCHEZ — Joseph Garrity scored the game-winning goal on a free kick just outside the box with about three minutes left in the second overtime to give the Cathedral High School Green Wave a 2-1 win over the Central Private School Rebels Tuesday night at D’Evereaux Stadium in an MAIS Division III South, District 4 match.
Central Private, which went into the match undefeated, scored first in the 20th minute of the first half to go up 1-0. That lead only lasted about five minutes as Kennedy Williams, on an assist from Ty Bertelsen, scored to make it 1-1.
“It was perfectly placed. Two touches and a kick,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “Our player of the game was Donovan Deer, our goalkeeper. He had some amazing saves. Some of the shots they took, it was like ‘oh, my’.
Deer finished with 13 saves, eight of them in the second half. Hogue noted that Central Private’s goalkeeper had 15 saves in the second half alone, including several on shots by Bertelsen.
“They had three point-blank shots,” Hogue said. “We knew they’ve improved a lot from the last time we played them (last year). We changed up our defense. It was a team win because everyone had to play well.”
Cathedral (2-4, 2-0) is scheduled to host Porter’s Chapel Academy for a Division III South, District 4 match Thursday at 5:30 p.m., but with rain in the forecast, that is likely to be rescheduled.
