NATCHEZ — Jasmin Washington and her three sons watched their house catch fire on Christmas Eve at 138 Homochitto St.
Washington said she is still trying to figure out how she and her children are going to get through the start of a new year.
For the time being, Washington said she is visiting her mother out of town at least until after the New Year’s holiday when her children go back to school.
Washington said her older sons, ages 9 and 13, who attend Susie B. West Elementary and Morgantown Middle schools, respectively, were both upset about losing their personal belongings while her youngest child is only 2 years old.
“We’re talking with the insurance now about what can be done,” Washington said. “My children and I lost all of our stuff — clothing, shoes, TV’s, our beds and everything.”
Washington said she believes her house insurance would pay for the damage to the house and she has discussed starting a GoFundMe account for the rest of her and her children’s material needs.
Officials said the fire itself had been contained to the upstairs portion of the house. However, the rest of the house suffered damage from heat, water and smoke.
“I know the upstairs is over with,” Washington said, “but the bottom floor might still be repaired.”
