NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams County Recreation Commission is looking to add a fitness court to the area’s recreation offerings.

Bids are currently being taken for an outdoor bodyweight circuit training area to be constructed near the community swimming pool near Natchez High School.

Commission Chairman Tate Hobdy said if the bids come in as planned, the fitness court would be an added recreation venue for the community.

One of the goals of the commission, Hobdy said, is to offer more than a swimming pool, by turning the area into a reaction center that provides multiple opportunities, including fitness.

“We want the area to grow as a fitness and sports area,” Hobdy said.

The advertisement for bids for the fitness court details the equipment that will be included in the project, including push-up handles, ladders, rowing handles, muscle-up rings, pull-up bars and bicep curl rings.

The fitness court is described as an outdoor bodyweight circuit training system that provides a seven-movement, seven-minute full-body workout.

Specifications require that the fitness court be “virtually maintenance free,” have no moving parts other than cables and that equipment is bolted in concrete.

Hobdy said a national fitness company has been installing similar fitness courts around the country.

“We are going to put it out to bid to see if we can afford it,” Hobdy said. “We are going to test the waters and see if it comes within budget.”

“We have an idea about what it will cost,” Hobdy said.

Hobdy said he didn’t want to say how much the budget for the project was to keep from unfairly influencing the bidding process.

“We want to make sure we are being fiscally responsible,” Hobdy said.

The fitness park is just one of the many offerings the commission wants to add.

“We are looking at adding other stuff, including a playground at some point,” Hobdy said. “There is room for other amenities.”

Sealed bids must be received by 10 a.m. on Feb. 28 at the County Administration Building at 314 State Street. For more information contact Francis Bell at fbell@adamscountyms.gov.
