LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — D’mario Weathersby scored 16 points and R.J. Fisher had 14 points as the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams overcame a sluggish first quarter to defeat the Briarfield Academy Rebels 54-45 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the MAIS Class A South State Tournament.

Even though District 4 No. 1 seed WCCA was the ‘home’ team on the tournament bracket, it was the ‘guest’ team in this game because District 5 No. 4 seed Briarfield Academy is the host school.

The Rams had a hard time getting into any kind of a rhythm on the offensive end and trailed the Rebels 13-5 at the end of the first quarter. But they bounced back in a big way with an 18-point second quarter to go into halftime down just three points, 26-23.

Neither team scored in double figures in the third quarter, but the Rams outscored the Rebels 9-5 to grab a 32-31 lead. Yet the fourth quarter turned out to be similar to the second quarter as the Rams put up 22 points while holding the Rebels to 14 points.

WCCA (24-6) will take on District 5 No. 2 seed Tensas Academy in the boys’ semifinals on Friday at 7:45 p.m. The Chiefs took care of District 4 No 3 seed Mt. Salus Christian School 72-33 in the day’s other boys’ semifinal game. The Rams also secured a berth in next week’s Class A State Tournament with the win over Briarifield.
