FERRIDAY — She’Kayla Miller finished with a game-high 21 points and Diamond Johnson had 14 points as the Ferriday High School Lady Trojans cruised to a 68-23 win over the Pine High School Lady Raiders Thursday night at the Ferriday Junior High School gym in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class 2A Playoffs.

Despite the lopsided win, Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron was a bit unhappy with the way they played in the early minutes of the game.

“I thought we were a little rusty starting out. We watched film on them and we knew their (weakness) was ball handling,” Abron said. “I called a timeout and we managed to get back on track like we normally do.”

Ferriday, the No. 9 seed, would go on to take a 23-6 lead on No. 24 seed Pine at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Trojans would continue to dominate the Lady Raiders the rest of the way, taking a 39-12 lead at halftime and a 57-15 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Abron credited Miller’s performance not only on offense but on defense as well for the victory.

“She’Kayla came with her ‘A’ game tonight. She’s our only ninth-grade starter,” Abron said. “Good steals, good defense. Deflecting a lot of passes. I think she had a season-high in points.”

Ferriday (22-6) advanced to the regional round and will next play on Monday, Feb. 18 at a time to be determined at District 2-2A rival and No. 8 seed Rayville High School. The Lady Hornets defeated No. 25 seed Ville Platte 77-31 Thursday night.

Delta Charter led Gueydan 16-10 after one quarter of play, 27-20 at halftime, and 40-30 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Bears finally scored something besides 10 points in a quarter when they had 11 points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for them, the Lady Storm put up 12 points in that quarter.

Shyvlie Blaney scored 15 points and Cloi Cummings poured in 14 points. Gracie Simon led the Lady Bears with 15 points.

Monterey girls 56, Oak Hill 52

HARRISONBURG, La. — The third time was indeed the charm for the Monterey High School Lady Wolves as they defeated the Oak Hill High School Lady Rams 56-52 Thursday night at the Harrisonburg High School gym in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

Oak Hill had defeated District 4-B foe Monterey in their two regular-season meetings. And it looked like it was going to be more of the same after the Lady Rams had taken a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But the Lady Wolves made sure that would not be the case this time around. Playing in a different gym because theirs was too small to accommodate fans from both teams, their comeback began in the second quarter when they outscored the Lady Rams 14-8 to go into halftime with a 25-24 lead.

Monterey rode that momentum into the third quarter, putting up 17 points while holding Oak Hill to 12 points for a 42-36 lead. Even though the Lady Rams scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, they couldn’t make enough stops to get over the hump as the Lady Wolves put up 14 points.

Andy Gray led the Lady Wolves with a game-high 29 points and Allie Lipsey had 10 points. The Lady Rams were led by Peyton Townley with 21 points while Kylee Johnson and Calan Nash had 11 points each.

Monterey (21-8) will next play at No. 2 seed Anacoco High School in the regional round at a time to be determined on Monday, Feb. 18. Anacoco had a first-round bye.

The result wasn’t very pretty for Vidalia in this bi-district round game Thursday night as the Lady Vikings were just no match for the Lady Rebels and took an 95-18 defeat.

“The girls played extremely hard. They just outplayed us,” Vidalia head coach Sue’Ann Easterling said. “The girls fought to the end and I’m proud of them.”

Not only did the Lady Tigers beat a Glenbrook team that won its district and received a first-round bye in the process, they did so in convincing fashion. And while the Lady Apaches’ season has come to an end probably quicker than they were expecting, the Lady Tigers not only advanced to the South State semifinals, but they also clinched a berth in next week’s Class AA State Tournament as one of the four teams remaining.

Central Hinds dominated Cathedral on both ends of the court throughout the first half.
