LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — It was a tale of two games for the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams this weekend at the MAIS Class A South State Tournament at Briarifeld Academy.
Unfortunately, both of them resulted in tough losses. On Saturday afternoon, D’mario Weathersby did his best to get WCCA past Riverdale Academy in the boys’ consolation game, but a lack of offense in the third quarter and other factors hurt the Rams in a 50-48 loss to the Rebels.
Weathersby finished with a game-high 28 points, but no one else scored in double figures for the Rams. Tal Redhead was the next high scorer with eight points, followed by R.J. Fisher with six points.
Riverdale Academy, the District 5 No. 3 seed, scored 17 points in the first quarter to grab a four-point lead. Even though that was the most points the Rebels scored in any one quarter, WCCA head coach Ken Perry said his team played better defense in that quarter than it did the rest of the game.
“The third quarter is where we lost it. We only scored seven points,” Perry said.
The Rams went into halftime down just two points, 29-27 before the Rebels used a 10-7 edge to take a 39-34 lead. WCCA was only able to outscored Riverdale 14-11 in the fourth quarter.
“They out-rebounded us. And we missed our free throw shots a lot,” Perry said.
Jackson Riggs led Riverdale Academy with 16 points and Parker Almond added 14 points.
WCCA (24-8) will be the South No. 4 seed and will take on North No. 1 seed West Memphis Christian School on Tuesday or Wednesday at a time to be determined in the first round of the MAIS Class A State Tournament, which is being co-hosted by Rebul Academy in Learned and Mt. Salus Christian School in Clinton.
Tensas Academy boys 70, WCCA 64 (Fri. night)
LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — Wilkinson County Christian Academy was upset by District 5 No. 2 seed Tensas Academy 70-64 in the boys’ semifinal round of the Class A South State Tournament.
The Rams led the Chiefs 25-22 after one quarter of play and 41-39 at halftime. However, WCCA had the lead and momentum taken away from it in the second half by a determined Tensas Academy squad.
The Chiefs outscored the Rams 15-10 in the third quarter for a 54-51 lead and made sure there would be no rally in the fourth quarter with a 16-13 advantage.
R.J. Fisher led WCCA with 16 points and Weathersby ended up with 14 points. Redhead and Will Olive added nine points each.
