NATCHEZ — History will be made on Friday, March 8 at the 2019 MAIS Class A-AA Girls’ All-Star Game takes place on the campus of Jackson Preparatory School.

That’s because Melanie Hall, the head coach at Class AAA Adams County Christian School, and Brandy Hall, head coach at Class AA Centreville Academy will become the first mother-daughter team ever in the history of the MPSA/MAIS to be coaching in the same all-star game — even though they coach in different classifications.

Melanie played in the MPSA Girls’ All-Star Game during her senior season at Trinity Episcopal Day School in 1980. Brandy was a senior at Trinity Episcopal in 2008 when she was named to the South AA-AAA All-Star team and played in that year’s all-star game. One of the coaches of that team was her mother, Melanie.

So how did this all come about? How did a coach of a Class AAA team end up being named one of the coaches for a Class A-AA All-Star Game?

“We both went up to represent our districts at the all-star meeting. The head of athletics, Les Triplett, asked us to coach at the all-star game,” Melanie said.

“I told them I wanted to coach, as long as I coached with her,” Brandy said.

“He (Triplett) called and asked us four our names, phone numbers, emails. I wanted to coach with her. I didn’t think it was going to happen,” Melanie said. “Les called the next day and said we could coach together. It’s a God thing. Thank you Lord for this opportunity.”

As for what their reaction was when they heard this was actually going to happen, Brandy said, “We thank God that we were able to do it. Everything fell into place. We were excited. We drafted our teams.”

Brandy will be the head coach of the Girls’ Class A-AA White All-Star team and Melanie will be the assistant coach.

“Mom always said when I became a head coach, she would greatly help me. She would be an assistant coach. I think it’s going to be great,” Brandy said. “Until this year, I didn’t know if I was ready to coach high school.”

Both ACCS and Centreville Academy will be represented in their respective girls’ all-star games. Danyel Weir and Shelby Mason of the Lady Rebels will be playing in the Class AAA-AAAA Girls’ All-Star Game while Macey Miley of the Lady Tigers will be playing in the Class A-AA Girls’ All-Star Game.

“Macey has been playing basketball since elementary school. She played guard in junior high school. She was a versatile player. She played in the post position in high school. When our guard went down with an injury, she had to play guard her senior season. She’s one of my best defenders,” Brandy said.

Miley was named to the District 4-AA All-District first team, a district that included eventual Class AA state champion Lamar Christian School. Also represented on this all-star team will be Class A state champion Tensas Academy.

“Our district MVP came from Lamar Christian. We have three players from Lamar Christian on our all-star team,” Brandy said.

“Danyel is a guard and Shelby is a post player, but their stats are real close. They are neck and neck,” Melanie said. “Both contributed greatly to the team. They were voted co-MVPs of our district (District 5-AAA).”

When asked what it will be like not coaching her own all-stars, Melanie said, “Shelby and Danyel were really happy for me. Everybody thought that was neat that we would coach together.”

“I wanted to coach mine,” Brandy said. “Some coaches do not want to coach their own all-stars. I don’t understand that.”
