BASTROP, La. — After being held in check for five innings, Vidalia High School’s bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning as the Lady Vikings rallied for an 11-5 win over the Beekman Charter School Lady Tigers Thursday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

Vidalia scored seven runs on seven hits and one walk in the top of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie after five innings of play. The Lady Vikings struggled against Beekman Charter’s trio of pitchers because they were having a hard time adjusting to how slow their pitches were.

“We started out a little slow. Harrisonburg’s pitching was a little better than what we faced today,” Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster said. “They used three pitchers that were kind of the same. Going into the sixth, we didn’t have but three hits. We couldn’t beat them last year because their pitching was slow.”

Both teams scored one run in the second inning before Vidalia scored two runs in the top of the second inning and another run in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead. But Beekman Charter answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to erase the Lady Vikings’ lead.

Once the Lady Vikings were able to get their bats going in the top of the sixth, there was little the Lady Tigers could do to contain them.

“I knew it was a matter of time before we got to their pitching. Our bats came alive in the sixth inning and it was downhill for them,” Foster said. “Once the hits got contagious, the girls started smiling and having a good time.”

Beekman Charter scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not nearly enough.

Hannah Harveston earned the win after allowing five runs, three of them earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk in a complete-game performance.

“I told Hannah if you throw strikes, the defense will be fine,” Foster said. “Hannah is very accurate. She locates the ball real well. She’s not going to overpower you. She did a real good job with that today.”

Angel Conway was charged with the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts in three innings.

Cayley Weatherly went 2-for-3 and Alyssa Cupstid had a double for the Lady Vikings, who finished with 11 hits. Gracie Wooden was 2-for-3 and Kasadee Armfield was 2-for-4 with a home run for Beekman Charter, who have lost five straight after starting the season 4-0.

Vidalia (2-0, 1-0) will take on Albany High School today at 6 p.m. at the Jewel Sumner Tournament.

Caldwell Parish 14, Delta Charter 3

FERRIDAY — The Caldwell Parish High School Lady Spartans defeated the Delta Charter School Lady Storm 14-3 Thursday afternoon. No other information on the game was available.

Delta Charter (1-3) will have two games in its own tournament Saturday. The Lady Storm will take on Franklin Parish High School at 11:30 a.m. and Block High School at 3 p.m.
