Cathedral 8, Loyd Star 6 (Monday)
NATCHEZ — Eighth-grader Mason Moore pitched three and two-thirds strong innings in relief and junior centerfielder Ben White had a big game at the plate as the Cathedral High School Green Wave rallied to defeat the Loyd Star Attendance Center Hornets 8-6 Monday afternoon at Chester Willis Field to extend its winning streak to four in a row.
Moore entered the game with Cathedral trailing 5-2 after starting pitcher Ronnie McMillan had a rough outing. Moore got out of the top of the third without giving up any more runs and then pitched three straight scoreless innings before Lody Star scored one run off him in the top of the seventh.
The Hornets scored one run in the top of the first inning before the Green Wave struck for two runs in the bottom of the first. And it looked like that 2-1 lead was going to be the last one of the game for Cathedral after Loyd Star scored one run in the top of the second inning and three in the top of the third to go ahead by three runs.
But after a scoreless fourth inning, the Green Wave finally ran starting pitcher Stephen Mills out of the game after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mills allowed four runs, three of them earned, on three hits, five walks and one hit batter with four strikeouts over four-plus innings.
Dane Smith came on in relief of Mills and retired the side in the bottom of the fifth before Cathedral scored four runs off him in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. Smith was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in two innings.
Jake Hairston came in for Moore and gave up just one walk in his one inning of work to pick up the save. Moore was credited with the win as he gave up two hits, struck out four and walked one.
