MARKSVILLE, La. — Sara Cockerham pitched a no-hitter and Shelbi Cross had three base hits to lead the Vidalia High School Lady Vikings to an 11-0 win over the Marksville High School in five innings Lady Tigers Thursday afternoon.
What was unique about Cockerham’s complete-game no-no was that she walked four batters and struck out only two batters. But she got plenty of help from a defense that committed only one error.
The Lady Vikings were only up 2-0 after three innings of play before putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. They put the 10-run rule in effect by scored two runs in the top of the fifth to go up 11-0. Then Cockerham retired the side to end the game early.
Cross went 3-for-4 with a double and Tionna Ellis was 2-for-3. Cockerham had a triple while Madison Bennett and Alyssa Cupstid each had a double for Vidalia, which belted out 11 hits.
Vidalia (10-6) plays host to the Viking Classic at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex today and Saturday. Today the Lady Vikings will take on Jewel Sumner High School at 4 p.m. and Beekman Charter School at 6 p.m. Both of those games will be played on Field C.
