VIDALIA — Sara Cockerham overcame six walks by giving up just four hits and striking out four batters as the Vidalia High School Lady Vikings needed a late scoring splurge to defeat the Harrisonburg High School Lady Bulldogs 8-4 Saturday morning at the Viking Classic at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
In the first three innings, neither team was able to pull away from the other. Both Harrisonburg and Vidalia scored two runs in the first inning, no runs in the second inning, and one run in the third inning to make it a 3-3 game.
The Lady Vikings finally took the lead for good with one run in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 4-3. But it wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth when the finally put some distance between themselves and the Lady Bulldogs with four big runs for an 8-3 lead.
Cockerham went the distance and was the winning pitcher despite the sometimes shaky performance on the mound. After allowing those three runs over the first three innings, she pitched four straight scoreless innings.
Tiffany Brewer had a huge game at the plate for the Lady Vikings as she went 4-for-4 while Cayley Weatherly was 3-for-4 with a double, Shelbi Cross was 2-for-3, and Macie Seyfarth was 2-for-4.
Vidalia improved to 12-7 with the win heading into its late-afternoon tilt with Kilbourne High School. After that, the Lady Vikings will play at Monterey High School on Monday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m.
Block drops two at Viking Classic
VIDALIA — The Block High School Lady Bears ended up going 1-3 at the Viking Classic after losing both of their games on Saturday at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
The Beekman Charter School Lady Tigers needed just three innings to defeat the Block Lady Bears 16-1 Saturday morning. No other information on the game was available.
The second game of the day for Block wasn’t much better as the Lady Bears fell to the Harrisonburg High School Lady Bulldogs 11-1 in five innings. No other information on that game was available.
Block (4-11) next plays on Tuesday, April 2 when it hosts LHSAA District 3-1A opponent University Academy of CENLA at 4 p.m.
Delhi Charter School 14, Block 9 (Fri. night)
VIDALIA — The Block High School Lady Bears scored plenty of runs in their game Friday night against Delhi Charter School at the Viking Classic. The problem was they did not score enough of them to keep up with the Lady Gators.
The result was a tough 14-9 setback for Block in its second game of the day to drop to 4-9 overall. No other information on that game was available. The Lady Bears had two games Saturday at the Viking Classic, first against Beekman Charter School and then against Harrisonburg High School, but no information on either of those games – not even a final score – was available.
Vidalia loses to Beekman Charter
VIDALIA — A costly error in the bottom of the fourth inning and poor base-running later in the game came back to cost Vidalia High School a sure victory as the Lady Vikings lost to the Beekman Charter School Lady Tigers 5-4 Friday night at the Viking Classic at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
Vidalia, the ‘visiting’ team in this game, scored three runs in the top of the second inning and seemed to be in control of the game with a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
But that’s when the momentum of the game switched to Beekman Charter. And it wasn’t anything the Lady Tigers did. It was something one of the Lady Vikings’ infielders could not do – field the ball cleanly.
“The ball went right through the second baseman’s legs and rolled all the way to the fence. She didn’t fall down on it,” Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster said. “Four runs scored on that play.”
And that allowed the Lady Tigers to take a 5-3 lead. Vidalia was able to score one run in the top of the fifth to make it a 5-4 game, but two base-running blunders with runners at first and third led to the Lady Vikings running themselves right out of the inning.
Madison Lozano was the winning pitcher for Beekman Charter. Hannah Harveston was charged with the loss for Vidalia.
The Lady Vikings lost the game despite out-hitting the Lady Tigers eight to five. Macie Seyfarth went 2-for-5 with a double and Shelbi Cross was 2-for-4. Tanner Spigner went 2-for-3 for Beekman Charter.
Vidalia (11-7) has two games today at the Viking Classic — 10 a.m. against Harrisonburg High School at Field C and 4 p.m. against Kilbourne High School at Field B.
