VIDALIA — Sara Cockerham pitched six innings of four-hit ball and hit a key two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Vidalia High School Lady Vikings rallied for a 13-8 win over the Harrisonburg High School Lady Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon.

Cockerham got the start for Vidalia and was pulled after three innings. But after Harrisonburg fought back to take an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster put her back in the game and she didn’t allow another run the rest of the way.

Two things were key to the Lady Vikings’ victory — they had 15 total base hits and they committed just two errors.

“I was super proud of the way the girls hit the ball. Defense was very good tonight. Totally different from last night (a 9-6 loss to Monterey High School),” Foster said.

Shelbi Cross hit a solo home run for Vidalia in the bottom of the first inning to tie game up at 1-1. It would remain that way through the second inning and then both teams put up multiple runs for much of the next three innings.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning before the Lady Vikings answered with three runs in the bottom of the third for a 4-3 lead. But Harrisonburg had a response of its on with four runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.

However, Vidalia tied the game at 7-7 with another three-run rally, this time in the bottom of the fourth. After Harrisonburg took an 8-7 lead, the Lady Vikings put together another rally, this one scoring six runs for a 13-8 lead, which was highlighted by Cockerham’s big blast.

Both Cross and Cockerham went 3-for-4 at the plate with Cockerham also having a double. Skylar Adams went 2-for-4 with a double and Macie Seyfarth had a triple for the Lady Vikings.

Vidalia (14-8) is scheduled to host Peabody High School at 5 p.m. Thursday, but Foster said there is a “100 percent chance of rain,” which means the game will probably be rained out.

Monterey 1, Oak Hill 0

MONTEREY — Sarah Jane Gray singled in Allie Lipsey for what turned out to be the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Monterey High School Lady Wolves defeated the Oak Hill High School Lady Rams 1-0 Tuesday afternoon in an LHSAA District 5-B game.

Lipsey led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, but it looked like she was going to be stranded at second base after Oak Hill pitcher Brooklyn Johnson got the next two outs. However, Gray came up with the biggest hit of the game to drive in Lipsey for a 1-0 Monterey lead. Johnson held the Lady Wolves to just five hits.

Oak Hill had numerous chances to put runs on the board, but outstanding defense by Monterey prevented that from happening. Once was with the bases loaded and just one out in the top of the fourth inning.

“We caught a fly ball and double up the runner at third base. She tagged and we threw to home plate and we tagged her out at third on a rundown,” Lady Wolves head coach Cary Shivley said. “We made some really nice defensive plays.”

Avery Cupit was the winning pitcher. She went the distance and gave up nine hits, struck out three and walked just one. And the defense behind her did not commit a single error.

“It was a good ball game. Both teams had opportunities. Both teams made plays,” Shivley said.

Harlie Murray went 2-for-3 for the Lady Wolves. Abby Pickering went 3-for-4 with a double while Destiny Chevalier and Lauren Pierce each went 2-for-3 with a double for the Lady Rams.

Monterey (7-10, 3-2) hosts Glenmora High School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Natchez High defeats Wingfield by forfeit

NATCHEZ — The Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs picked up a win over MHSAA Region 6-5A opponent Wingfield High School after the Lady Falcons decided to forfeit the game that Natchez High was scheduled to host Tuesday afternoon.

Natchez High improved to 6-3 overall and finished second in Region 6-5A with a 2-2 record. The Lady Bulldogs won’t hit the field again until Monday, April 8 when they host McComb High School with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.

Mangham 18, Delta Charter 5 (6 innings)

FERRIDAY — The Mangham High School Lady Dragons had 10 base hits and took advantage of seven errors in defeating the Delta Charter School Lady Storm 18-5 in six innings Tuesday afternoon.

The third and six innings proved to be big for Mangham as the Lady Dragons scored eight runs in the top of the third and seven runs in the top of the sixth that allowed them to run-rule the Lady Storm.

Oddly enough, Delta Charter also had 10 hits. However, the Lady Storm could not come up with the key hits to move runners over or bring runners in to make this a closer game. They scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go from down 11-0 to trailing 11-5. But that would be as close as they would get.

Sydney Watts was charged with the loss on the mound. Skylar Bolyer went 3-for-4 with a double while Alexis Yates was 2-for-4 with a double. Josie Richardson also went 2-for-4.

Delta Charter (8-10) plays host to Bunkie High School for Senior Night today at 4 p.m.

Natchez High 9, Enterprise 7 (Monday)

BROOKHAVEN — Carleigh Sproulls had a solid complete-game performance on the mound and the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs overcame some shaky defense with 17 base hits in a 9-7 win over the Enterprise Attendance Center Lady Yellow Jackets Monday afternoon.

Sproulls scattered six hits in her seven innings of work, which was much-needed considering Natchez High committed eight errors and held on after jumping out to a 9-3 lead after four and one-half innings.

The Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the first inning and added four runs in the top of the third to claim a 5-0 lead. Enterprise answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-3 game.

Then Natchez High (5-3) had a response of its own with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and a key insurance run in the top of the fifth to go ahead 9-3. The Lady Yellow Jackets hurt themselves by committing nine errors.

“My girls played a solid seven innings of offense,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Bonita Hamilton said.

But the Lady Yellow Jackets would not go away quietly. They scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning and one run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to four runs at 9-5. They made the game a little more interesting with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a two-run game, but Sproulls finally retired the side to end Enterprise’s comeback attempt.

Six Lady Bulldogs finished with at least two hits in the game. Aysia Pollard, Karmen Bernard, and Jayden Flowers each went 3-for-4. Kaitlyn Green, TaNiyah Johnson, and Zanya Lyles each were 2-for-4. Johnson, Lyles, Pollard, and Ava Reese each had a double.

Anna Jergins went 3-for-4 with two doubles for Enterprise.

Delta Charter 20, Rayville 0 (3 innings; Monday)

RAYVILLE, La. — Sydney Watts allowed just one hit as the Delta Charter School Lady Storm needed just three innings to take care of the Rayville High School Lady Hornets 20-0 Monday afternoon.

Watts pitched all three innings, struck out three batters and walked three batters. She also had a double at the plate.

Defensively, the Lady Storm (8-9) committed no errors while the Lady Hornest committed six errors.

Jaden Boydstun and Sophie Cooper each went 3-for-3 to lead Delta Charter’s 16-hit attack. Skylar Hawley had a triple and Skylar Bolyer had a double.

The Lady Storm scored three runs in the top of the first inning, seven runs in the top of the second inning, and 10 runs in the top of the third inning.
