NATCHEZ — Two men face charges of marijuana possession after they called police officers to a donut shop to ask for directions, Natchez Police officials said.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said officer J. Coulston was dispatched Saturday to 501 John R Junkin Drive, the Donut Shop, to assist an individual who was trying to get help looking for a tire shop.

“He had two flat tires,” Armstrong said. “Coulston escorted Cedric Otis back to his car.”

When they arrived at Otis’ vehicle, Coulston said he was talking to a passenger named Anthony Jenkins when he detected an odor or marijuana coming from inside the car, Armstrong said.

“Officers received permission to look in the vehicle,” Armstrong said, “and officers discovered a hidden large plastic bag containing a large quantity of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.”

Armstrong said officers seized the marijuana and transported Otis, 31, of 108 Beckwith St., and Jenkins, 56, of 135 Richwood Drive, both of Gilbert, Louisiana, to the station where they were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana more than 30 grams but less than 500 grams.

“If convicted,” Armstrong said, “they could face imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine of not more $5,000 or both.”

No bond had been set for Otis or Jenkins as of late Monday afternoon.
