SIBLEY, La. — The Vidalia High School Lady Vikings saw their season come to an end Thursday afternoon after being shut out by the Lakeside High School Lady Warriors 4-0 in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class 2A Playoffs.

Despite having a winning overall record at 14-10 and a better record than 12-13 Lakeside, Vidalia entered the playoffs as the No. 19 seed while the Lady Warriors came in as the No. 14 seed.

Which meant the Lady Vikings had to travel all the way to just outside this small town in Webster Parish in northwestern Louisiana – about a three-hour drive from Vidalia.

And if that wasn’t enough, Vidalia had to deal with pitcher Laney Taylor, who went the distance and allowed just two hits. She also struck out eight batters and walked none.

“When we hit the ball, we just hit it directly at them. It just wasn’t one of those nights where it wasn’t meant to be,” Lady Vikings head coach Forrest Foster said. “We’ve been a good-hitting team all season.”

Lakeside scored single runs each in the bottom of the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings. Three of their six base hits went for doubles.

Skylar Adams had a double and Shelbi Cross had a single for the Lady Vikings. Sara Cockerham was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks to go with six strikeouts.

“We played good ball. We played good defense,” Foster said. “I’m proud of my girls. We went 14-11 overall, which was our best season in four years.”

Lakeside (13-13) advanced to the regional round and will take on No. 3 seed Mangham High School. Mangham took care of No. 30 seed Port Allen High School 15-0 in three innings Thursday.

Block 17, White Castle 0 (3 innings)

JONESVILLE — ShirCold Bowman hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run to highlight a 15-run second inning as the No. 12 seed Block High School Lady Bears cruised to a 17-0 win over the No. 21 seed White Castle High School Lady Bulldogs in three innings Thursday afternoon in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Bowman’s home run was the only base hit of the game for Block. That’s because White Castle’s pitchers couldn’t find the strike zone and walked several Lady Bears.

Block scored two runs in the bottom of the first before going on a tear in the bottom of the second to go ahead 17-0 on its way to run-ruling the Lady Bulldogs (2-12) by way of the 15-run-after-three innings rule.

The only thing that went in White Castle’s favor is that it out-hit Block two to one. And both of those base hits came in the top of the first inning. Winning pitcher Tadradia Johnson was able to pitch out of that jam and pitched two straight 1-2-3 innings after that.

Block (5-14) advanced to the regional round and will be at a familiar opponent in No. 5 seed Delta Charter School on Wednesday, April 17 at a time to be determined.
