Team members are Kayla Starr, Liza Mayo and Maggie Ulmer, and Starr a junior at Cathedral, shot 78 to finish third in the individual state competition without having seen the golf course.

“We couldn’t get a practice round in because it was too wet, and I had never played the course before,” Starr said.

Cathedral golf coach Kurt Russ said Kayla has been on the team for four years. “Kayla decided as an eighth-grader that golf was her game, and since then she works hard year round,” Russ said.

On her schedule are Mississippi Junior golf events, tournaments on the Kelly Gibson tour and tournaments with the Southern junior golf association, said Kayla’s father Jody Starr.

“Kayla will play in several events this summer, her father,” Jody Starr said. “The next one will be the Optimist International Junior qualifier, June 3-4 in Montgomery Alabama.”

Kayla said she looks forward to her schedule.

“I am looking forward to the Optimist tournament, because if I qualify I would like to play in Orlando,” (in the finals) Kayla said.
