NATCHEZ — The Natchez Community Swimming pool opened to swimmers for the summer season at 11 a.m. Saturday following a frenzied week to pull it all together after the Metropolitan YMCAs of Mississippi ceased management of the pool one week before the opening.

A staff of approximately four lifeguards and Interim Pool Manager Faye Minor were on hand Saturday morning when the pool opened.

The water was crystal clear as sunbeams reflected off the ripples of the pool.

No visitors were at the pool, however, during the first 20 or 30 minutes of the pool’s opening, which had been in doubt since May 17 as Natchez-Adams County Recreation Commission members shuffled to fill the management gap left by the YMCA’s departure.

The YMCA’s contract had expired in March and had not been renewed so the YMCA ceased managing the pool on May 16, said Scott Slover, Adams County Board of Supervisors attorney.

The recreation commission met on May 17 and appointed Minor as interim pool manager and tasked her with re-hiring the lifeguard staff as county employees, obtaining insurance in the county’s name and preparing the pool for opening.

Minor said the transition went well.

“It was a smooth transition,” Minor said. “We have not seen any problems.”

Minor said recreation commission members and some county supervisors volunteered to help pull it all together and the pool actually opened with an Adult Swim night on Thursday.

The pool will be open seven days per week, Minor said, on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for general swimming, excluding this Tuesday which will open at 3 p.m. Thursdays the pool will be open for general swimming from 2 to 6 p.m. with adult swim nights from 7 to 10 p.m.

The price of swim lessons is $55, which is down from the $95 the YMCA had charged for the two-to-three-weeks lessons, Minor said.

Admission to the pool is $5 per day per person or $35 per person per month or $65 for a family per month.
