NATCHEZ — A 3-year-old girl who had been severely beaten in a fatal child abuse case June 5 has been released from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Lailah Hill, 3, had been treated at UMC in critical condition in June following an alleged abuse that left her severely injured and killed her sister Armani Hill, 4, who died at Merit Health Natchez from blunt force trauma to her head, neck and abdomen on June 5.
Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said Lailah Hill and her 8-year-old brother were placed in foster care while her mother LaKeishia Jones, 25, and her mother’s boyfriend James Christopher Anderson, 24, are charged for her injuring and her sister’s injuring and subsequent death.
“Lailah is in fact out of the hospital doing well,” Armstrong said. “I think it is the grace of God that she was able to survive that severe beating and make the recovery she did.”
The girls were reportedly placed under Anderson’s supervision when they were injured.
Jones and Anderson’s cases were both bound over to the grand jury last week, Armstrong said, adding the case remains open and active as the Natchez Police Department works collaboratively with the Department of Human Services and Child Protective Services.
Jones is charged with two counts of child deprivation of necessities with substantial harm while Anderson is charged with two counts of felony abuse.
“We have not made any additional arrests, but the case remains open and is progressing very well,” Armstrong said. “The important thing is these children are being cared for, which is what they deserve. I wish it could’ve happened earlier. Unfortunately, it took the death of Armani Hill to bring this case to the forefront, and I wish that more could’ve been done.”
