Silver Street to be opened after weeks of flooding

NATCHEZ — The bottom of Silver Street will be back open to traffic Wednesday morning after being closed for flooding since April, city officials said.

Part of Silver Street, a few yards past Magnolia Grill, has been closed off since April after floodwater covered the street.

For the past three months, the street as been open to two-way traffic on the North side while the bottom of Roth Hill was inaccessible.

After clearing some sediment deposited by the river, Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell said full access to the street would be granted once again Wednesday.

The Mississippi River has been above flood stage of 48 feet at Natchez since Jan. 4 according to a Jackson National Weather Service report.

As of Monday afternoon, the river at Natchez was recorded at 51.64 feet and forecasted to continue receding to 50.6 feet by this afternoon.
