VIDALIA — The Louisiana Department of Transportation is set to repave a portion of U.S. 84 known as Carter Street in Vidalia beginning Aug. 26, said Vidalia Mayor Buz Craft.

“DOT is going to put out signs on the Aug. 22 and start overlay on the Aug. 26,” Craft said he learned on Friday.

The project to repave 2-3/4 miles of Carter Street from the foot of the Mississippi River bridge on the Vidalia side to J. Logan Sewell Drive west of Walmart was announced last August with a projected start date of May or June.

Craft said flooding on the Mississippi River had delayed the start of the project.

“When everything is done, we will have a new main highway going through town,” Craft said at the time of the announcement.

On Friday Craft said he was happy the project was finally about to begin and said that any delay in traffic through the construction period will be worth it.

“Maybe they will do like Natchez did at nigh tot alleviate some of the traffic problems,” Craft said, referring to recent paving of U.S. 84 in Natchez.
