NATCHEZ — The Natchez High School Bulldogs had their moments on offense, but it was their defense that stood out Friday night at Natchez High Jamboree at Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium.

In both the junior varsity and varsity games against Hazlehurst High School, the Bulldogs defeated the Indians 6-0. Sophomore LJ Browders scored on a 6-yard touchdown run for the JV Bulldogs. Another sophomore, quarterback Kyreek Murray, threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver James Singleton for the varsity Bulldogs.

As for who stood out the most for Natchez High’s varsity squad, head coach Roy Rigsby said, “Defensively, they played like a collective group. They made plays. They caused turnovers. To have two (combined) shutouts in two (20-minute) quarters, that’s something to be encouraged by. Offensively, Desnick Bolden at running back. He did some tough running.”

Not only was Rigsby encouraged by the overall play of the running backs, but also the interior defensive line.

But there was one area that he said needs to be corrected before the Bulldogs open up the season on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at Wilkinson County High School

“We want to make sure that we make more completions in the passing game,” Rigsby said. “The timing was off.”

As for his overall assessment of his team’s performance, Rigsby said, “Not as good as it could be.”
