Cathedral Green Wave beat ACCS Rebels

NATCHEZ — Tuesday afternoon’s MAIS District 4-4A game between Cathedral High School and Adams County Christian School turned into a slugfest as the Lady Green Wave held on for a 12-8 victory over the Lady Rebels.

It was Senior Night at the ACCS softball field for as Lady Rebel seniors Cassi Haydel and Geri Brumfield were honored before the varsity game. Unfortunately, the two had a rough outing at the plate as they went a combined 1-for-8. Haydel was 1-for-5 with a double, one run batted in and one run scored while Brumfield was 0-for-3, reached on an error, was walked once, and scored one run.

The game was scoreless through two innings before Cathedral broke through with four runs in the top of the third inning. The Lady Green Wave added one run in the top of the third inning and two more runs in the top of the third to what seemed to be a commanding 7-0 lead.

But the Lady Rebels responded with a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 7-6 game. Cameron Strittman and Georgia Martin each had a single and Rileigh Walters was walked. An error and Haydel’s double also contributed to the scoring.

However, the Lady Green Wave answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning and two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-6 lead. ACCS tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh, but could only plate two runs.

Gracie Harrigill led Cathedral at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs, and one run scored. Anna Poole had a double and three RBIs. Fisher Iseminger was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two run scored.

Heidi Zimmerman led the Lady Rebels at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Kate Parsons was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored while Paris Harveston was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Madeline Smith got the win for Cathedral after allowing eight runs, seven on them earned, on 10 hits and six walks with two strikeouts. Becca Cowan was charged with the loss as she gave up 12 runs, six of them earned, on 13 hits, four walks, and one hit batter while striking out nine batters.

Cathedral (10-13, 3-4) plays at Prairie View Academy on Monday, Sept. 16 for a varsity-only game at 5 p.m. ACCS (4-14, 0-8) ends its season next Monday when it hits the road to take on Bowling Green at 6:15 p.m. That follows the junior varsity game at 5 p.m.

Silliman Institute 5 (Monday)

CLINTON, La. — Allie Feltus and Lauren Dunbar each had two-run base hits during a six-run rally in the top of the second inning as the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave held on for a stunning 6-5 win over the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats Monday afternoon in an MAIS District 4-4A game.

Silliman jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Cathedral bounced back in a big way in the top of the second inning. Haleigh Nunnery hit into a fielder’s choice, which brought in the first run. Feltus singled in two runs to put the Lady Green Wave ahead 3-1. Dunbar added to the lead with a two-run double and Fisher Iseminger brought in one run with a triple on a 3-2 count.

But the Lady Wildcats would not go down easy. An RBI double in the bottom of the third inning and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth made it a 6-3 game. A two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh cut Cathedral’s lead to just one run before winning pitcher Madeline Smith was able to pitch out of a potential jam.

Gracie Harrigill was 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored while Dunbar went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

Oak Forest Academy 5,

ACCS 1 (Monday)

AMITE, La. — Emilee Casanova struck out 12 batters in a complete-game performance as the Oak Forest Academy Lady Yellow Jackets defeated the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels 5-1 Monday afternoon in MAIS District 4-4A action.

Casanova allowed one earned run on just four hits, walked just two batters and hit one batter. She also reached base twice and scored two runs.

ACCS scored what turned out to be its only run in the top of the first inning when Geri Brumfield walked and scored on a double by Kate Parsons. Oak Forest took the lead for good with a two-run rally in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from the Lady Rebels.

Parsons and Cameron Strittman each had a double while Heidi Zimmerman and Georgia Martin each had a single for the Lady Rebels. Kayla Watts was 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI while Madi Thornton was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and one run scored.
