Natchez — In the rematch between cross-town rivals Cathedral High School and Adams County Christian School, the Lady Green Wave defeated the Lady Rebels 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at D’Evereux Stadium to stay undefeated in MAIS Division II South, Class AAAA.

It was Senior Night at Cathedral and six Lady Green Wave seniors were recognized right after completion of the varsity match — Sophia Bennett, Faith Anne Brown, Hailey Ellis, Rivers Lee, Olivia Moore, and Erinn Williams.

During the match, Ellis and Moore each scored one goal and Moore also had an assist. Izzy Dupre led the scoring for the Lady Green Wave with two goals. Lee finished with six saves, including an incredible fingertip save that kept ACCS from scoring a sure goal.

“I was super proud, particularly for the seniors,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “We play them regardless. AC brought their ‘A’ game. It wasn’t a cakewalk by any means.”

However, it wasn’t quite as thrilling as when these two teams met at ACCS on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when Cathedral scored the game-winning goal in the final minute to escape with a 1-0 win.

“Rivers didn’t have many shots. She had one threat. Everybody played well. We have to work on finishing our shots,” Hogue said. “We’ll be in the playoffs, whether we finish first or second.”

Cathedral (16-4-1, 5-0) plays host to Brookhaven Academy today at 6 p.m. in an important Division II South, Class AAAA for both teams.

“They are 4-1 in (division). The outcome of the game could determine first and second in our (division),” Hogue said. “They’re strong. That’s why I like to put games like this last.”

A Cathedral win, tie with penalty kicks to follow, or loss by just one goal with both teams ending up at 5-1 in division play means the Lady Green Wave will finish in first place.

“If they win, we’ll both be 5-1 and it will go to heads-up goals. We beat them by two goals earlier in the season. For them to take first place, they will have to beat us by three goals,” Hogue said.

However, if the Lady Cougars win by two goals, both teams will be tied and then first and second will have to be determined by which team scored the most goals in division play.

“We might have the edge up on them,” Hogue added.

Hogue also said that Brown and Moore made the MAIS All-Star Girls’ Soccer Team and will be playing at the MAIS All-Star Game on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Jackson Preparatory School soccer field.
