NATCHEZ — Officials said emergency sirens are down in 13 different locations in Natchez and Adams County and were not properly functioning during testing this month.

During a Monday meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors, Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said sirens in Natchez and Adams County seem to be disconnected from his office and would not sound when tested. Bradford said the sirens are supposed to respond to radio signals and all run on the same frequency.

Sirens that are experiencing and outage include those located at Sibley, Kingston, Cloverdale, Beau Pre, Main Street, Cranfield, Stanton, Pine Ridge, Liberty Road, Seargent Prentiss Drive, Foster Mound Road, Martin Luther King Jr. Road and Finwick, Bradford said.

Bradford said residents should be aware of the malfunction and make sure they are able to receive emergency notifications in other ways.

“Our outdoor sirens are on an older system, and we have some upgrades coming later on,” Bradford said. “That is just only one way to get a notification out in the event of severe weather in Adams County. We also have the CodeRED alert system that is free to all residents. Also any information that needs to be put out is being put out by my office via phone, text or email.”

Bradford said Motorola professionals have been contacted about the issue and would work to have the systems running again.

“We know not everyone has a cell phone, and some people depend on these outdoor sirens, so we’re working in the best way that we can to keep those up and going. They are mechanical and can go out at any time,” he said.

Bradford said CodeRED works on both landlines and mobile devices.
