NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted in ending a high-speed chase that originated in Claiborne County Sunday evening, authorities said.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Craig James said the chase began when a car swerved into oncoming traffic in Port Gibson at approximately 4:45 p.m. Sunday and nearly hit a state trooper’s vehicle head on.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle fled on U.S. 61, James said.
The trooper pursued the fleeing vehicle and a chase ensued along U.S. 61 through parts of Jefferson County, said Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, and reached speeds close to 100 mph.
Jefferson County contacted the Adams County Sheriff’s office for assistance, Patten said, and the deputies deployed spikes to blow out the tires and ended the chase at U.S. 84 and U.S. 98 in Adams County.
The driver and a passenger were apprehended and taken into custody by Adams County deputies and the suspects were later transported to Claiborne County.
Michael Amacker, 25, faces a charge of possession of marijuana and Charles Jill, 44, faces charges of failure to yield to blue lights, DUI first offense, possession of marijuana, speeding and no insurance, a spokesperson for the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office said.
Both men are from Gulfport and were still being held in the Claiborne County Jail on Monday afternoon. The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the men would face a bond hearing Tuesday morning.
