NATCHEZ — Concord Quarters was built 200 years ago this year and the proprietors plan to throw a 200th Anniversary party starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to mark the occasion.
“You can expect lots of food,” said Deborah Cosey, who owns the bed and breakfast along with her husband Gregory. “We have a beautiful menu anyway, and there will be mini tours, just small tours that I will be doing. There will be lots of fun, dancing, and I’ll be singing some gospel, some blues and just celebrating the anniversary of the house.”
The Coseys have owned Concord Quarters at 301 Gayosa Ave., Natchez, for approximately five years.
Concord Quarters is one of the two matching brick buildings that originally flanked the rear courtyard of Concord, which was arguably the grandest building of the colonial period (1716-1798) that was built 1794-95 for Spanish Governor Manuel Gayoso de Lemos. Concord burned in 1901, and Concord Quarters is what remains on the site today.
As for Saturday’s party, Cosey said it would be held in the courtyard.
“There is a young woman who is making a gumbo in the courtyard and the meal is pretty indicative of what the enslaved would have eaten, even down to the dessert,” Deborah Cosey said. “It is buttermilk spice cake with molasses and butter cream frosting. There are fire pits of course on the courtyard side.”
Deborah Cosey said people could RSVP by calling 601-493-3018 or by emailing concordquarters@gmail.com.
However, tickets are $25 per person and will be available at the door starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
“We are just celebrating the beautiful old property that has been standing for 200 years,” Deborah Cosey said. “It is just incredible. It is what is left to interpret the significant Spanish history here at Old Concord.”
