NATCHEZ — First Baptist Church of Natchez is inviting the community to a combined Unity in Community service at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church located at 150 Devereux Drive.

The service will feature a combined choir from different churches, including Zion Chapel AME, Parkway Baptist Church and others.

“We are going to have a worship time together and a message on the subject of unity, the importance of having unity in our community,” said the Rev. Doug Broome, Ph.D., pastor of First Baptist Church.

Sunday’s event will be the second in what Broome said will be a regular series. The first Unity in the Community service was held Sept. 11 at First Baptist Church.

“The first time we had Bro. Birdon Mitchell (pastor of Zion Chapel), an African American speak, and this time I am going to speak,” Broome said. “The next time we will go back and have an African American speak.”

Broome said he would deliver a message Sunday night on the bond of love from the book of Ecclesiastes.

“In some regards we are a very diverse community, and it is fine to be diverse but we don’t want to be divided,” Broome said of the origin of the series that he said the church hopes to offer three times per year. “We felt like this would give us a chance to get together and the truth is the better we get to know each other the more we discover things in common and the better we will like each other. It is just a matter of people not knowing one another. If we can develop relationships, that’s the key to success for our whole community.”

Broome said a number of churches, including Zion Chapel and Parkway Baptist would be there but others are welcome to attend the service as well.

“I certainly hope there will be some from other churches,” Broome said. “At the same time we are not trying to interfere with other churches that have regular Sunday night programs. We’re not trying to take away from what they are already doing. We are just trying to do this. We felt like it would pay more dividends and bring as many people together as possible. Everyone is welcome. We would love to see them join with us in trying to promote unity in our community.”
