Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann has reportedly tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus, his spokesman said Tuesday.

“Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann has informed members of the Senate he tested positive for COVID-19 and will follow State Health Department guidelines by self-quarantining and working at home,” Hosemann’s deputy chief of staff Leah Rupp Smith said.

Hosemann is the latest and most high profile state government official who has contracted the virus, days after lawmakers worked in the Mississippi Capitol to enact legislation to change the controversial state flag.

Hosemann just turned 73 and thus would be considered at a higher risk of complications due to his age, health experts say.

House Speaker Philip Gunn reported he had the COVID-19 virus over the weekend and Gov. Tate Reeves announced Sunday he was in quarantine pending test results after coming into contact with someone who had the virus.

Reeves announced Tuesday his test results were negative.

All three men — Reeves, Hosemann and Gunn — were photographed in close proximity to one another and without face masks last week as the governor signed the flag bill into law.
