Mississippi COVID-19 numbers continue sharp climb with Wednesday report

NATCHEZ — The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 674 new cases of COVID-19 and 30 virus-related deaths in Mississippi on Tuesday.

MSDH reports 21 of the latest recorded deaths occurred between July 5 and July 7 and were only recently confirmed to have been COVID-19 related with death certificate reports.

Mississippi’s total of COVID-19 cases since March 11 now stands at 32,888 with 1,188 deaths.

Mississippi’s COVID-19 numbers are surging each day in recent weeks.

“Please wear a mask,” said Gov. Tate Reeves during a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “Please protect your loved ones and stay at home as much as possible.”

Adams County’s numbers increased by 17 cases to 332 confirmed COVID-19 cases since Tuesday’s reported number of 315 in the county. Adams County’s death toll remains at 18 on Wednesday and local officials are reporting larger numbers of positive cases in the county in recent days.

On Monday, Adams County Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Bradford said Adams County had 69 active cases which is a sharp increase in active cases compared to earlier months of the pandemic when active cases averaged 20-25 at any given time.

Natchez Mayor and Board of Aldermen and Adams County Board of Supervisor members unanimously enacted mask resolutions for the city and county during a special joint meeting on Friday, requiring most people to wear a mask in public places where social distancing of 6 feet or more is not possible.

Statewide, MSDH reports 108 long-term care facilities such as nursing homes in the state now have active outbreaks and 41 new COVID-19 cases where an outbreak is defined as one or more cases among residents or staff.

There were 648 COVID-19 patients in Mississippi hospitals as of 6 p.m. Monday, which is up from 609 patients on Sunday.

Adams County has had a total of 332 confirmed virus cases and 18 virus-related deaths reported since March 11. Of those cases, 44 were residents of long-term care facilities in Adams County and 10 residents of long-term care facilities died with the disease.
