BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — A construction worker from Mississippi is facing a charge of attempted murder, accusing him of shooting a fellow worker in the parking lot of a Vermont motel on Saturday night.

Emanuel R. Tenner III, 22, of Natchez, Miss., is expected to be arraigned Monday in Brattleboro on charges of attempted second degree murder and other offenses, police told the Brattleboro Reformer. It was not immediately known if he is being represented by an attorney.

Brattleboro police officers were nearby when they heard gunshots coming from the area of the Econolodge Motel and responded at about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was shot in the torso, said Brattleboro Police Lt. Bob Perkins. He was taken to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, said Perkins, who did not know the the man’s condition.

The two men were in Vermont to work at the Interstate 91, Exit 6 bridge project in Rockingham, said Windham County State’s Attorney Kelly Tracy Shriver.

Several witnesses were interviewed by police, Perkins said. Tenner was arrested shortly after police arrived and a handgun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered, Perkins said.
