FERRIDAY, La. — After another impressive win last week, the Delta Charter School Storm will play host to the Delhi High School Bears this Friday night in the LHSAA District 2-1A opener for both teams as well as Delta Charter’s homecoming game.

Kickoff between Delhi High School (1-4, 0-0) and Delta Charter (3-1, 0-0) is scheduled for 7 p.m. Last Thursday night, the Storm defeated Cedar Creek School 38-20. Delhi High lost at Vidalia High School 55-40 last Friday night.

Last year, when both teams were in District 4-1A, the Storm shut out the Bears at home 34-0. Delta Charter head coach Blake Wheeler said having an extra day to get ready for Delhi High turned out to be a good thing.

“It helped us scout them when they played Vidalia. You get to see them up close and personal,” Wheeler said.

Even though the Bears came up short to a team from a higher classification, Wheeler said there are some thing about Delhi that impresses him.

“Offensively, they’ve got good team speed. They run the ball well. Defensively, they bring a lot of pressure. They tackle well. They’re well-coached by (head) coach Landry Carter,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler said on Wednesday morning that he is pleased that his players are staying focused what is ahead of them and that’s Delhi High and not the distractions that go along with homecoming week.

“You’re going to have distractions. We make sure the kids stay focused on the task at hand. They know it’s a district game. They’re fully aware of that. Make sure the main thing stays the main thing,” Wheeler said.

As for how practice has gone the first couple of days this week as well as what Delta Charter is working on in practice to get ready for Delhi, Wheeler said, “Just like every week, we work on fundamentals. Working on the schemes we’re going to see against Delhi. I thought we had a fantastic day of practice (Tuesday). We executed well.”

He added that the Bears run a spread offense, but they will also run some power formations. Defensively, they will bring a lot of pressure – just like they did last week against Vidalia.

“They like to run the ball. Number 2 (senior running back/free safety Jay Wright) and No. 24 (senior wide receiver/middle linebacker Day’shaun Moss), they’re really good athletes. On both sides of the ball. They play a lot of man-to-man coverage,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler noted that some players will have to have a big game for the Storm to come out victorious Friday night.

“Specifically, Will Wiley, our quarterback. He’ll need to run the offense. He runs the ball for us. Make sure we don’t turn the ball over and keep the offense driving. (Senior offensive tackle/defensive tackle) Timothy Harrell. Jalen Ivy, he’s a left guard for us. Pulls on a lot of plays. He’s kind of the leader of the offensive line. When I talk about Jalen, it’s him and the entire offensive line,” Wheeler said.
