VIDALIA, La. — On Sunday, Dec. 8, Vidalia will have two celebrations to get locals ready for the Christmas holiday.
The first is the Vidalia Women’s Club’s annual Christmas Parade, which starts at 3:30 p.m.
The parade line up will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Vidalia High School and travel along Carter Street to end at the Vidalia Upper Elementary School. Santa will be making an appearance as well.
Following the parade is the Vidalia Christmas Festival at the old historic courthouse sponsored by the Vidalia Beautification Committee.
Vidalia Beautification Committee President Cassandra Lynch came to the Concordia Parish Police Jury on Monday to formally request their attendance to the festival and their support. She asked the police jury for portable bathrooms for the festivities.
“It would be nice to see the police jury at the Christmas Festival,” Lynch said. “We have the courthouse all decorated for the whole town. … It’s a nonprofit event for the whole community and the police jury is part of that community.”
In asking for the police jury’s support, Lynch also asked for a status update on whether the police jury had been successful in applying for grants to renovate the inside of the old courthouse for use.
Police Jury President Collin Edwards said the police jury had put in a grant application for mold and asbestos removal and abatement.
“Next year, I’d like you all to consider helping the Christmas festival,” added Lynch. “If it wasn’t for the Town of Vidalia, I couldn’t get this done. They paid for all the lights in the trees and for the electrician to come out and make sure everything is up to par. I’d like to see us make this a joint effort between the police jury and the Town of Vidalia.”
In other matters during Monday’s meeting of the Concordia Parish Police Jury, the police jury moved its Dec. 9 meeting to 6 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the Concordia Parish Courthouse, located at 4001 Carter St., Room 2.
The police jury also approved an occupational license for Michael Davis of Davis Welding & Fabrication in Vidalia and an alcohol and beverage permit for Gunpreet Singh of Marina Fuel in Monterey.
No other actions were taken at Monday’s meeting of the police jury.
