Law enforcement with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Natchez Police Department are actively searching the woods near Auburn Avenue for a sex offender on the run from officers.

Law enforcement officers search for Edward Wells on Saturday afternoon in the area of Auburn Avenue. (Submitted)

Edward Wells fled from officers who were attempting to detain him for failure to register as a sex offender. Wells also has an active warrant from the Mississippi Department of Corrections for cutting off an ankle monitor, Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said.

Wells was last seen in the Auburn Avenue area wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans and has a large spiderweb tattoo on his neck, Patten said.

The sheriff said Wells is “unhinged” and potentially dangerous and asked the public to be on high alert and notify authorities immediately if they spot this individual by calling 911 or ACSO.

“He has actively been evading police capture,” Patten said. “Our K9 officer just spotted him on Auburn Avenue. We’re asking the public to remain calm but be vigilant. If they spot this suspect anywhere, please contact ACSO or 911. We currently have the sheriff’s office and police department responding and more officers en route to that area.”
