NATCHEZ — Even though Cathedral High School had just five base hits in its 15-2 win over Natchez High School in just four innings last Tuesday night at Chester Willis Field, the Green Wave took advantage of several walks issued by Bulldogs pitching.

In the battle of the two local teams which use Chester Willis Field for their home games, this time Natchez High was the “visiting” team and Cathedral was the ‘home’ team. And the Bulldogs did get off to a good start against Green Wave starting pitcher Owen Jordan.

Chris Sewell and Martavis Woods each reached base, Sewell on a walk and Woods when he was hit by a pitch. Each of them scored a run for the Bulldogs to give them a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. It was all Green Wave after that as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good.

“It was one of those sloppy games. It started sloppy at the start for us, but we were able to bounce back,” Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said. “We didn’t have many hits, but we were patient. We drew a lot of walks. And we put the pressure on them.”

Doug Smith had a run-scoring double for Cathedral in that frame. Then Jordan settled down and threw two shutout innings. In the bottom of the second, the Green Wave scored four more runs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Tristan Fondren, to go head 15-2.

Jordan was the winning pitcher as the gave up two runs, one of them earned, one hit with six strikeouts and two walks.

Sewell was charged with the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs after giving up eight runs, all of them earned, on six hits with six strikeouts and 10 walks. Ahmarrion Fletcher has the only base hit in the game for Natchez High with a double.

“I’m proud of the way we performed at the plate. But we have some things to clean up as far as pitching and defense,” Beesley said.

Before the two teams face each other again at Chester Willis Field on Friday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m. and with Natchez High being the ‘home’ game for that occasion, each team had other midweek games against other teams at that very same venue.

Natchez High (3-2) played host to Raymond High School on Wednesday with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m. Cathedral (5-3) was scheduled to play host to Porter’s Chapel Academy for a varsity-only game on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
