NATCHEZ — Ethan Givens hit a game-tying two-run double and Coleman Carter followed with the go-ahead double as part of a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Adams County Christian School Rebels defeated the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 5-4 last Tuesday night.
ACCS’s late-game rally followed a three-run rally by Brookhaven Academy in the top of the third inning that gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Luke Simmons singled to centerfield to bring in one run. Liam Magee and Carter Palmer were each issued walks by starting pitcher Parker Roach, with each of them scoring one run.
The third inning was the only one in which Roach ran into any trouble, but he was pulled by Rebels head coach, or ‘manager’ as he recently put it, David King after three innings in which he gave up five hits to go along with four strikeouts and three walks.
Carter was the winning pitcher as he gave up just one hit and one unearned run while striking out seven and walking two over four stellar innings of relief.
Magee got the start for Brookhaven Academy and was charged with the loss after giving up five runs, four of them earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four and two-thirds innings.
ACCS jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a solo home run to centerfield by Sean Kerry Cothern in the bottom of the first inning. Other than that, Magee had his way with the Rebels until he ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Caden Aplin brought in the fourth run for ACCS in that frame with an RBI groundout.
Down 5-3 after five innings of play, the Cougars could only muster up one run after that against Carter and the Rebels held on for the victory.
Hart Smith led the Rebels at the plate by going 2-for-3 while Givens was 1-for-3 with the two RBIs. Jackson Anderson and Bryce Leprairie also had a base hit.
The Cougars were led by Walt Smith, who went 3-for-4 and their defense did not commit a single error.
ACCS improved to 4-2 with the win. The Rebels return to action on Tuesday, March 4, when they travel to Brookhaven to take on the Brookhaven Academy Cougars with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
