NATCHEZ — In his first start on the mound for Cathedral High School’s varsity baseball team, Andy Keith was nearly unstoppable and almost unhittable in the Green Wave’s 15-0 win over the Porter’s Chapel Academy Eagles last Thursday night at Chester Willis Field.

The game went just three innings and as effective as Keith was over those three innings on the bump, it’s probably a good thing for Porter’s Chapel Academy that the game didn’t go any longer than it did.

Keith struck out nine batters, gave up just one hit, and walked one batter. And Cathedral really gave him all the run support he needed by plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

“Anytime you have nine strikeouts and one walk, that’s a pretty good start,” Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said. “He was filling up the strike zone with multiple pitches.”

The Green Wave added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead 7-0. Tristan Fondren, who went 2-for-2, had the big hit in that frame with an RBI triple. Then they ended up run-ruling the Eagles by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Walker Probst.

Tripp Wimberly went 2-for-2 with a double and Clayton Atkins also had a double for Cathedral.

It was a rough outing for McClung (no first name given) as he was charged with the loss for Porter’s Chapel after allowing 12 runs, 11 of them earned, on eight hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

“I thought we played a pretty solid game. We were able to get all our seniors to start on Senior Night, so I thought that was pretty cool,” Beesley said.

With the win, the Green Wave improved to 6-3 overall. They were the ‘visiting’ team for their game Friday at Chester Willis Field against Natchez High School on Friday with the JV game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.
