NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors voted 2 to 1 on Monday to file a lawsuit against garbage collection vendor United Infrastructure for material breach of contract.

The vote came in a closed session following the supervisors’ meeting on Monday morning.

District 2 Supervisor and President of the Board Kevin Wilson said he moved to ask County Attorney Scott Slover to file the lawsuit after learning that the garbage collection company has not been adequately insured, which could put Adams County’s taxpayers at risk.

“We wrote them a letter in September outlining the areas in which they are not living up to the contract. We wrote them another letter in November, asking for proof of insurance,” Wilson said.

He said that the request was ignored. However, after learning one of the company’s garbage trucks had been in an accident with a motorist and was not carrying the proper insurance, Wilson said the county asked again for proof of insurance.

“They sent us over something that was issued that same day,” Wilson said.

Adams County residents have complained that their trash is not picked up two days a week and that the company does not consistently pick up trash. Supervisors have also complained that the company is not operating proper vehicles for collecting garbage and that those vehicles are not properly registered with the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Wilson made the motion to file suit against United Infrastructure, which District 1 Supervisor Wes Middleton seconded. Wilson and Middleton voted in favor of the lawsuit, while District 5 Superintendent Warren Gaines voted no.

District 3 Supervisor Angela Hutchins and District 4 Supervisor Ricky Gray were absent from the meeting and did not vote.
