FERRIDAY, La. — Michael Kelly led Ferriday High School with 20 points and BeDe Terrell added 18 points as all five players for the No. 4 seed Trojans scored in double figures in their 81-69 win over the No. 13 seed Lake Arthur High School Tigers in the Regional Round of the 2025 LHSAA Non-Select Division IV Playoffs.
The game was played at the Ferriday Junior High School Gym because it has more seating available than at the Ferriday High School Gym. And it didn’t take long for the Trojans to give their fans plenty to cheer about.
Ferriday dominated Lake Arthur on both ends of the court and used their, as head coach Shawn Davis put it, “significant height advantage” to dominate when it came to rebounding and points from each team’s post players.
“We were full of energy. We hadn’t played in 10 days, so we had fresh legs. Kids got the proper rest and were properly hydrated and eating the right things, so they had plenty of energy,” Davis said. “We controlled the boards and controlled the tempo of the game.”
By the time the first quarter, the Trojans led the Tigers 27-9. Which turned out to be a good thing because the next two quarters saw the momentum go back and forth between the two teams.
“They found a rhythm in the second quarter. We had some defensive lapses. We weren’t sharing the ball as much as we did in the first quarter because we had such a big lead,” Davis said. “The ball got stuck in one player’s hands. At times, we went 1-on-5.”
Lake Arthur managed to outscore Ferriday 17-14 in the second quarter, yet went into halftime down 41-26. The Trojans regained their composure offensively in the third quarter and outscored the Tigers 21-18 for a 62-44 lead.
Kelly and Terrell each ended up with double-doubles to lead Ferriday. Kelly finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds while Terrell had 18 points and 13 boards. C.J. Washington poured in 12 points while Jay Jefferson and Shavaris Watson had 11 points apiece.
“Somewhere between the second and third quarters, we were up by as many as 24 points,” Davis said. “We tried to play some young players in the fourth quarter, but they kept their starters in. We tried to manage the end of the game.”
And while the Tigers ended up outscoring the Trojans 25-19 in the fourth quarter, it would not be nearly enough.
Watson almost had a double-double of his own as he dished out nine assists to go with his 11 points.
“He really controlled the game with his ball handling, seeing the defense. We had all five starters in double figures, so that was a plus,” Davis said. “Their post players had four points. Our post players had 44 points. That was the difference, our height advantage.”
With the win, the Trojans improved to 24-9. They will play host to the No. 12 seed Delhi High School Bears on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ferriday Junior High School Gym in the LHSAA Non-Select Division IV Quarterfinals. Delhi upset No. 5 seed Arcadia High School 50-45 at Arcadia is another Regional Round game last Tuesday night.
“I don’t know anything on Delhi. (Head) coach (Ramon) Lusk, he’s had some good teams over the years. They’re not as talented as in past years, but they’re going to be a tough out. We look forward to the challenge. It’s good to be playing at home with a chance to go to Lake Charles next week,” Davis said.
