NATCHEZ — An inmate of the Adams County Jail managed to escape from custody early Friday morning, reportedly stealing an unmarked Adams County Sheriff’s Office unit to make his escape.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said Myco Fort, 22, escaped from the jail on State Street at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

No longer in jail clothing, Fort was later spotted wearing what appears to be a Black Jordan jacket over a Nike hoodie and blue jeans in the Oakland Drive neighborhood in the Morgantown area.

Patten asks area residents to check their security cameras and report any unusual findings to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

“We do not have reason to believe he has left that area yet,” Patten said at 4 p.m. Friday.

Fort had been incarcerated for burglary charges and was a trusty. He was brought downstairs in the jail building to clean early Friday morning when he ran, Patten said.

“While mopping the floor, he decided to drop the mop and run out the back door,” Patten said. “We’ve got every person we have out looking for this individual now, but we’re asking for help from the public as well.”

Since his escape, it was later learned that Fort had managed to take keys to one of the unmarked sheriff’s office units from a lock box and drive to the Morgantown area, where he wrecked the vehicle near Huber’s Construction, Patten later said. From there, Fort couldn’t drive the vehicle anymore and fled on foot.

It was only when a civilian called 911 to report seeing the vehicle off the road and stuck in a ditch that Patten said he learned of how Fort had gotten to the Morgantown area.

“He was supervised when he was brought downstairs to mop, but since that time, there was a failure of supervision that has been dealt with,” Patten said. “I cannot and will not tolerate a mistake that severe.”

According to arrest records, Fort was a resident of Broadmoor Drive. He had been arrested on Feb. 24 for burglary charges.

“Do not help this individual run,” Patten said. “Anyone who chooses to do that will be charged as well. Call 911 immediately if you see him or if you want to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers” at 888-442-5001.
