WESSON — Led by Parker Brooks and Jack Wilson as well as two big innings at the start of the game, the Wesson Attendance Center Cobras needed just four innings to defeat the reeling Natchez High School Bulldogs 14-2 last Thursday night.
Brooks went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and two runs scored while also being walked twice. Wilson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored while also being walked twice.
Wesson only had five total base hits – Cooper Neely had the other one as he went 1-for-3 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored while also being hit by a pitch twice – but the Cobra also took advantage of three errors and 12 walks issued by Natchez High pitching.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start as they scored one run in the top of the first inning off starting pitcher BP Rollins.
Unfortunately, the Cobras responded with a five-run rally in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good at 5-1. The Bulldogs scored their only other run of the game in the top of the second to make it a 5-2 game. However, Wesson answered with an eight-run barrage for a 13-2 lead.
Rollins went two and one-third innings and gave up two runs, both of them earned, on one hit with four strikeouts, three walks, and two hit batters.
Mason Bouldin, one of four players who ended up being used on the mound by head coach Dan Smith, had the only base hit for the Bulldogs. Can Damion Hawkins and Martavis Woods each drew a walk and each of them scored one run. Braylon McDaniel, another player who took to the mound for NHS, had one run batted in.
The Cobras scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to run-rule the Bulldogs and end the game early.
Bouldin went one inning and gave up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits with one strikeout, two walks, and one hit batter. McDaniel went just one-third of an inning and allowed four runs, all of them earned, on one hit with three walks and one hit batter.
Eighth-grader JaCorrian Davis went one and two-third innings and gave up three runs, none of them earned, on two hits with one strikeout, three walks, and two hit batters. Jaylin Neal had the toughest outing for the Bulldogs as he did not record an out, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on one hit with three walks.
With the loss, the Bulldogs’ losing streak increased to three in a row and dropped them to 4-5 overall. They played host to MHSAA Region 3-5A opponent South Jones High School for a varsity doubleheader on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Chester Willis Field. Then they were scheduled to host Port Gibson High School on Saturday with the JV game at 11 a.m. and the varsity game at 1 p.m., if the weather permitted.
