BROOKHAVEN — Tucker Tarver was just as good on the mound as he was at the plate for Brookhaven Academy as he led the Cougars to a 12-2 win over the Cathedral High School Green Wave in six innings last Friday night.
Tarver went five innings and gave up two runs, both of them earned, on just one hit with seven strikeouts and five walks. The only base hit he allowed was a solo home run by Tripp Wimberly in the top of the fifth inning.
Cathedral scored its first run of the game in top of the first inning. It was all Cougars from there. Brookhaven Academy scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning via the home run. Luke Simmons hit a two-run home run and that was followed by a solo shot from Tarver for a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 5-1 lead before plating five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a commanding 10-1 lead.
“I’m just pretty frustrated with the way we’re playing right now. I don’t think the kids are competing up to their level,” Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said.
Wimberly’s home run made it a 10-2 game, but Brookhaven Academy run-ruled Cathedral in the bottom of the sixth inning after bringing in two more runs.
Landon French was the losing pitcher for Cathedral after going just three and one-third innings and allowing nine runs, five of them earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and one walks
Tarver helped his own cause by going 3-for-4 with two doubles to go with his home run while Simmons was 3-for-3 and Walt Smith was 2-for-3 with a double.
“We’ve got some tough teams coming up on our schedule. We’ve got to play our best baseball now,” Beesley said.
With the loss, Cathedral fell to 7-5 overall. The Green Wave played two varsity games early this week at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, first at 4:30 p.m. Monday against Parklane Academy and then on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Brookhaven Academy.
