NATCHEZ — Guests to a particularly regal Spring Pilgrimage event at Holly Hedges may want to pay a visit to the modiste first to look the part.
For this season of pilgrimage, Holly Hedges will honor the timeline in which the house was built with a modern-appeal event—a Bridgerton Ball. Pack said costumes of the empire period are encouraged but not required, adding that those who do not have such costumes may wear dress attire.
The ball will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Holly Hedges. Tickets are $100 each, and the hostess, Tammy Pack, said a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Pilgrimage Garden Club’s historic preservation efforts.
“Bridgerton is set around 1800 or 1810, around the time Holly Hedges was built, so we thought, why not have a Bridgerton Ball at Holly Hedges?” Pack said.
However, unlike the larger estates presented in the Bridgerton series on Netflix, Holly Hedges can only accommodate around 50 guests, providing a more intimate setting for Regency romance.
Guests will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and contemporary music from the Bridgerton soundtrack performed by a live string orchestra under the light of over 200 candles — battery-operated for safety reasons — with a realistic flicker. “We’ve added dimmer switches to every light, so those will be dimmed for a little extra light,” Pack added.
A 20-by-30-foot room will be cleared of its sofas and coffee tables to make way for the ballroom area, which will include a lighted courtyard where guests can give dancing “their best shot,” she said.
The hosts will be learning a few moves themselves for an authentic experience.
Pack said the festivities will also include plenty of photo opportunities, including a carriage arrival provided by Southern Carriage Tours and a few more surprises.
“Guests will be free to video and photograph anything they want and we’ll also have a photographer and videographer coming to Natchez for the ball,” she said.
Natchez artist Kate Lee Laird will also be doing a live painting from the ball that will later become a part of the décor of Holly Hedges.
“It’s a good reason to dress up for fun. I myself will be wearing an outlandish costume from England, too short to be considered authentic 1800s attire, but that is what a party is for. It’s party for fun,” she said. “It the people visiting Natchez have an option to participate in something fun but also encourages future tourism by showing people that Natchez is a place to embrace fun and history combined.”
