SUMMIT — Four days after an embarrassing 12-2 loss at Brookhaven Academy, Cathedral High School’s varsity baseball team took to the diamond looking to avenge that loss. But the rematch was not at Chester Willis Field in Natchez.

Instead, the game between the Green Wave and the Cougars took place last Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Southwest Mississippi Community College. And on this occasion, Cathedral got the better of Brookhaven Academy 9-4.

After the loss to the Cougars last Friday night, Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said he was “frustrated” with way his team played. But after their victory on Tuesday, Beesley had a completely different response to his team’s effort.

“I thought we played our most complete game of the season. We pitched well. We played good defense and had timely hitting,” Beesley said.

Even though Owen Jordan allowed 11 hits, not a single of them went for extra bases. And Brookhaven Academy didn’t score against him until the bottom of the sixth inning.

“Owen dominated on the mound,” Beesley said. Jordan gave up four runs, all of them earned, struck out five, and walked just one in a complete-game performance.

Cathedral, the ‘visiting’ team in this game, scored two runs in the top of the second inning and added three more runs in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 lead. The Green Wave added another run in the top of the fourth to go up 6-0 before the ‘host’ Cougars struck for one run in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh inning, Cathedral extended its lead to 9-1 thanks to three runs, highlighted by an RBI double by Tristan Fondren, who went 2-for-4. Jordan helped his own cause by going 2-for-3.

Drake Cox went 2-for-4 with a triple while Ethan Keith was 2-for-3 with a double and Doug Smith was 2-for-3.

“Doug Smith had a good game at the plate, as did Drake Cox and Ethan Keith. They had some good hits that scored some runs,” Beesley said.

Landon Magee was charged with the loss for Brookhaven Academy after he went three-plus innings and gave up five runs, all of them earned on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Cougars were led at the plate by Luke Simmons, who was 3-for-4. Walt Smith and Tucker Tarver each went 2-for-4.

With the win, the Green Wave improved to 9-5 overall. They play again on Monday, March 17 at 6 p.m. at Chester Wills Field when they play host to Hartfield Academy for a varsity-only game.

Cathedral 3, Parklane Academy 2 (Monday afternoon)

SUMMIT — Doug Smith hit a key two-run double in the bottom of the first inning and Ethan Keith pitched seven strong innings as the Cathedral Green Wave held on for a 3-2 victory over the Parklane Academy Pioneers Monday afternoon in a game played at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Smith’s double, the only extra-base hit of the game by either team, off Parklane Academy starting pitcher Aaron Holmes gave Cathedral a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers answered with one run off Keith in the top of the second inning to make it a 2-1 game. However, the Green Wave responded with turned out to be a key insurance run in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1.

The Pioneers scored one run in the top of the third to trail the Green Wave 3-2, but Keith pitched four shutout innings after that to preserve the win.

“I thought Ethan did a good job. He controlled the game. He struggled with his command early, but he found it and gave us a chance to win the game,” Cathedral head coach Andrew Beesley said. “We had some good at-bats early in the game. We were able to get a lead and hold on to it.”

Keith allowed two runs, both of them earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks in his complete-game outing. Holmes went five innings for Parklane and gave up three runs, two of them earned, while holding the Green Wave to two hits to go along with seven strikeouts and three walks.
