NATCHEZ — Indianola has hired Adams County Administrator Stephanie Washington as its city clerk.

As of Monday morning, Washington had not resigned from her Adams County position but did so in a closed session at the end of the Adams County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Monday. Her last day at work in Adams County will be March 31.

However, on Monday afternoon, Washington said she had not formally accepted the Indianola job but planned to do so.

The Indianola Board of Aldermen voted to hire Washington on Feb. 24. However, Indianola Mayor Ken Featherstone vetoed that hire. On Monday, March 10, the aldermen overrode the veto by a 4-1 vote. Washington’s salary in Indianola will be $110,000, more than she makes as the county administrator here.

An Indianola area newspaper reported that Washington has been the city’s contracted financial consultant since last summer.

Adams County hired Washington in December 2023. She had previously worked as comptroller of Sunflower County.

Washington said Indianola is her home and her father and boyfriend live there.

“I am going to go home for some personal reasons, but I have offered to help out Adams County before they find someone else for this job,” Washington said. “The board has been nothing but supportive of me. I have been torn about leaving, but with my hometown in a financial crisis, and I have been helping them out during this crisis, I had to decide between my home and my career goals and who needs me the most. Indianola is in a financial crisis and they need me most.”
